Exchange IMF Event 7515

I've gotten a few questions or seen a few lately on the Event Viewer message and wanted to just make mention of it. If you now have Service Pack 2 of Exchange 2003 installed on your SBS machine then you might be seeing a few of the 7515 error events in your logs. Here's a Technet reference to it.

By default IMF doesn't scan anything larger than 3MB in size. A spammer wouldn't waste the bandwidth or time to send you a file that large so IMF doesn't even care about the msg. Makes sense. What doesn't make sense it that everytime this happens you get an error in the event log that is 7515 with the message included as above in the Technet reference. So each morning when you get a status report it'll have that on it. It's by design folks. Thus it shouldn't be an error but it is...go figure. It would have been much better in my opinion if the Exchange folks made this an informational warning rather than an error. At the current time there is no way to change this functionality.

Anyway just know that the message was over 3MB in size. I guess if you wanted to see who is getting all the good .mp3's files in the company this is probably a good way as well!

Windows Live Local for Outlook (Beta)

You might want to check out the new Windows Live Local for Outlook (Beta). I installed it today and am pleasantly surprised by the nice integration into Outlook for appointments. You can simply click on the location tab and enter the information and get directions right in Outlook. This is nice but an even better feature would be to have this sync up to my Mobile 5 device with the directions included. It doesn't do that right now. But being able to print a direction list has never been easier, even if I am a personal fan of mapquest.com.

SBS Backup 0x800423f4 error resolved?

Well it appears that we might have a resolution to our 0x800423f4 problem that would appear in SBS Backup. We had this problem on 3 servers that all appeared out of the blue. Common fact is that all are SBS 2003 Premium boxes with Service Pack 1 and ISA 2004 installed. Therein lies the problem. Apparently the ISA 2004 logging database instance was causing problems with NTBackup that would just fail the VSS copy.

Here's why to get involved in the community. I posted the problem and a good SMB'er out of WY Rusty Brown saw it. He was experiencing the same issue. He called PSS support and after several attempts got a friendly Michelle Dixon in the TX center. They fixed the problem by reinstalling the advanced logging features of ISA 2004. With Rusty's permission I've put the solution here:

Hope this helps you out, I know it did for us!

Big props to Michelle and Rusty.
